The Black-Capped Chickadee is found in the dark area of the map throughout the year.  The diet consist of insects, berries and seeds.   They have one brood a year with a clutch size anywhere from 1 to 13 eggs; white with fine reddish-brown dots.  Incubation period is 12 - 13 days, and the nest period is 12 - 16 days.

The Black-Capped Chickadee is a very easy bird to attract to your yard with bird feeders.  They are not to picky what type of bird feeder you have. Once they find out there is available food, they will be at your yard year round.  Which does make it pleasurable when the migrating birds have left. With patience, you can even teach the chickadee to eat out of your hand. BIRDHOUSES

Any style, shape and exterior size will work if the interior dimensions are closely related to a 4" x 4" floor to a 5.5" x 5.5" floor.  Interior height of 8" to 10".  An entrance hole of 1 1/8" in diameter, 6" to 8" above the floor.   Place your house anywhere from 4' to 15' with the entrance hole facing any direction away from the most common wind direction.  If you plan to place more than one nest box for the Black-Capped Chickadee, place your nest boxes 650' apart to avoid territorial denomination.

NOTE:

You can mount your box to the trunk of a pine, birch, aspen or elm tree.  Placing 1 inch of wood chips in your box will persuade the chickadee to use your box, even though they will find other material to make their nest with.  Bird house dimensions for the Black-Capped Chickadee are closely related to Wrens,Titmouse and Nuthatches. When placing out a birdhouse for the Chickadee you may end up getting one of these other birds instead.
